Item 1: THE TRUMPETER / A publication of/MWC Young Republicans / BOX 2464 COLLEGE STATION FREDERICKSBURG, VIRGINIA / Vol. 1, No. 3 November, 1967 / ONLY A BATTLE LOST / On November 7, 1967 Paige A. Young was defeated in his bid for the 61st District House of Delegates seat representing Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania. This was Young’s first attempt in the political arena, and he was found to be in very good spirits when interviewed on Wednesday. Young said, “I think more people should take an active interest in government affairs, and I certainly intend to continue working for the same principles that we fought for in this campaign.” He went on to say, “There is a better alternative to the Great Society - - the Republican alternative. The voice of the American people came through loud and clear in 1966. In 1967 again, the Republican Party made gains in Virginia and other parts of the country. We will continue working for 1968.” / Commenting further, Mr. Young expressed his thanks to the MWC Young Republicans who tirelessly and enthusiastically dedicated so many hours of their time to the campaign. He said, “I was very encouraged that these young people took such an interest. It shows that they, too, are concerned with the trend of government today, and I wish that I could personally thank each of them. They did a terrific job. / SHENANDOAH VALLEY COLLEGE CONFERENCE / The Second Annual Shenandoah Valley College Conference will be held November 18&19, at the Natural Bridge Hotel. The Conference is designed to bring College Republicans in contact with major political problems in a seminar atmosphere. / The conference will open at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday. There will be two general sessions, followed by a banquet and another of the famous College YR Parties. On Sunday there will be a third session followed by the State College YR Executive Board meeting. The conference promises to be one of the largest attended events outside of a convention to be held. / The sessions will cover Republican alternatives to the Great Society, the New Left, and Viet Nam. Featured speaker at the banquet will be Congressman Donal E. “Buz” Lukens, former Young Republican National Chairman. (End of document)
