Article 1: The Bullet / Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia
Article 2: Letters to the editor / Dear Editor, / As a freshman and a resident of the 8th District, I would like to make a few comments on the coming election. I suspect that we will be seeing a great deal of activity on campus on behalf of the Presidential candidates—some has already begun—and I think this is great. I fervently hope that Richard Nixon will be the next President of the United States, because I think that only he can provide the leadership we so desperately need at home and abroad. / But I sincerely hope that in the excitement of this Presidential election, we don’t forget that there is also a Congressional race going on in this District. I worked for the election of Bill Scott in 1966 when he was first elected to Congress. Since then, I have become more convinced than ever that Bill Scott is a great Representative for the 8th District. / He has travelled to every part of the District to hear their problems at the county court houses; he has taken several polls of his constituent’s views and his voting has reflected these views; he has sent out newsletters to keep his constituents informed on what he is doing; and he has opened an office in Fredericksburg to further serve the District’s needs. In short, he has been a true Representative of all of the people in this District and a full-time Congressman. No matter how small a problem is, when someone feels deeply enough to ask Bill Scott for help, they get it. / There are so many things wrong with the government in Washington now, and sometimes we forget to show appreciation for those things that are good. I hope that during the hectic campaign of the next month the students here will consider the great job Bill Scott has done, and will join with the over-whelming number of 8th District residents in helping to re-elect Bill Scott to Congress. / Sincerely, / VALERIE ADAMS
Article 3: The Free Lance-Star, Fredericksburg, Virginia Wednesday, September 25, 1968 / MW Students Form Group For Nixon / Mary Washington College students have formed a Youth for Nixon group at the college in honor of a National Youth for Nixon Week which begins today. / The MWC group is scheduled to distribute Nixon-Agnew flyers on campus this week and to recruit students to work on former vice president Richard Nixon’s campaign. College Young Republicans will also donate all the proceeds of a weekly fund-raising project to the Nixon campaign. / Later, the Youth for Nixon group will do volunteer work with local Republican writers, and members will write letters to their families and friends requesting support for Nixon. / The group is the second to be formed in the 8th District. The first was formed last week at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. / Youth for Nixon Week, proclaimed by Nixon’s national youth organization, is scheduled to end Oct. 1.
Article 4: National Nixon group opens MWC branch / Youth for Nixon, a national organization for student supporters of presidential hopeful Richard M. Nixon, reached the Mary Washington College campus two weeks ago. Differing from other Republican organizations at MWC, Youth for Nixon is for all Nixon supporters, regardless of any past or present party affiliation. / Members of Youth for Nixon feel that MWC Nixon supporters can make a real contribution towards Nixon’s election if they are joined together in an organized campaign effort. Beverley Brown, Youth for Nixon’s president at MWC says “the club’s main goal is to solicit Nixon support from adults of voting age around the community and state.” / Members are doing volunteer work at the Nixon campaign headquarters in Fredericksburg and will mail Nixon literature to voters of this area. Youth for Nixon also plans to have write-ups in the Richmond and Fredericksburg newspapers to show the tremendous support for Nixon among college-age people. / About 250 students at MWC are already Youth for Nixon members, and 250 new members are expected this week, Beverley said. Members will be given Nixon bumper stickers and campaign literature and will receive a weekly newsletter with current campaign developments. All work is voluntary—members can choose how much or how little work they want to do.
