Article 1a: Two Candidates For House Seat Urge Final Push / By JOHN GOOLRICK / The two 8th District congressional candidates both exhorted the party faithful last night to sock it to ‘em in the remaining 10 days of the campaign. / Incumbent Rep. William L. Scott, a Republican, warned about 50 supporters at a $10-a-plate dinner at the General Washington Inn, “We must be concerned about complacency. Everywhere I go I hear good things, but I hope we won’t let up. Two years ago Judge Smith thought he had nothing to worry about and that complacency helped beat him.” / At the Princess Anne Inn, where about 175 Democrats were gathered for a $10-a-plate dinner, Democratic nominee Andrew H. McCutcheon told the audience, “We’re going to win on Nov. 5. It will take a lot of work on your part and my part between now and then but we have brought unity to the Democratic party in the 8th District and we are going to have a Democrat in Congress once again.” / Principal speaker at the Democratic dinner was J. Vaughan Gary of Richmond, former 3rd District congressman who McCutcheon served as administrative assistant for four years.
Article 1b: Gary told the audience that if, “I had to name one person in Virginia who was best qualified to serve in Congress, that man would be Andy McCutcheon…I know whereof I speak because it was my pleasure to have him on my staff and I can tell you that he’s a man who can do just about anything and do it well…if the people of this district have the wisdom to put him in Congress, I predict that within
Article 1c: 10 years time, Andy McCutcheon will be known as one of the most distinguished and respected members of that body.” / Gary assailed what he termed the “frightening ecomomic record” of the national Republican party. In eight Republican years under Eisenhower, said Gary, there had been three recessions, unemployment climbed from three to seven percent and the average gross national product increased but $75 billion yearly. Under the years of the Kennedy-Johnson administrations since 1960, he said, there had been 92 months of depression free growth, a decline in unemployment from seven to four per cent and an average gross national product increase of $181.5 billion yearly.”
Article 1d: “Many people seem to be protesting these days,” he said, “but about what I don’t know. I think this is a pretty good country myself and I think under the Democrats we have attained the greatest prosperity enjoyed by any nation in the history of the world.” / On the question of Vietnam, Gary defended the Johnson record and said he was opposed to “any Chamberlin type sell-out there or any place else…more than 20 years ago after a visit to Europe I came back to America and said I was convinced the goal of the Communists was nothing less than world domination. Nothing has happened in the meantime to change my mind.” / The law and order issue “we so often hear about” said Gary, “isn’t really a federal matter. It’s a state matter. The Constitution specifically gives the states authority to regulate their own domestic matters…if by law and order some of these candidates mean establishment of a federal gestapo, then I’m completely against it.”
Article 1e: Scott, in his talk at the General Washington, noted that former Congressman Gary was “talking in favor of my opponent right here in Fredericksburg tonight and I think that’s good, I think it’s nice for a former boss to give a former employee a pat on the back. When my opponent worked for Mr. Gary, he used to vote down in the Third District near Richmond and, of course, that was as it should be. But as a matter of fact I am not sure at all that this man who is now running for Congress in the 8th District has ever voted in the 8th District. I’m not saying he hasn’t, but I’d be interested in knowing.” / Following the dinner, Scott was greeted by about 100 supporters, many of them Mary Washington College Young Republicans, at a free rally and dance at the Sheraton Motor Inn. “I haven’t been perfect,” he told the group, “and I haven’t claimed to be. But I’ve done my absolute best and I’ve given you my full-time representation. I’ve traveled the district night and day and I don’t think anyone can say they couldn’t come and sit down with me and discuss their problems. I’ve enjoyed serving the 8th District and I hope I’ll have the opportunity and good fortune to continue that service.”
