Item 1: The Young Campaign / Club chairman, Bari Anne Holden / started organizing for the campaign / 10 days before the start of classes. The / club took an active role in the campaign / on every level. Bari Anne was a member / of Paige’s “War Council” which made all / the campaign decisions. The club / members staffed the headquarters 5 days a / week, conducts telephone surveys, typed / (in quintriplicate) the only existing precinct lists / for Stafford and Spotsylvania County, / decorated headquarters, organized the “matching / funds” program, contributed money, manned / the polls in Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania on / election day, and distributed bumper / stickers and literature in the main / shopping center
Article 1: MWC Class Straw Vote Picks Young / Republican Paige Young easily defeated Democratic Del. George C. Rawlings Jr. in a straw vote taken in a Mary Washington College political science course. / Both Rawlings, the area’s incumbent in the House of Delegates, and his challenger, spoke before the class on political parties on different days. / The instructor, Dr. Raiford Sumner, conducted a written vote among 42 students in the class later and Young polled 30 votes, Rawlings 6 and 6 members didn’t vote. / Sumner noted, however, that only about three of four of the class members live in the 61st Legislative District comprising the city and Stafford and Spotsylvania counties.
