Former YR chairman Margaret Lawrence resigned from the position in order to more aptly fulfill the responsibilities of secretary to the Virginia College Republican Federation. / The YR’s have been active in the two weeks since school has begun, increasing their membership to 200 and beginning their financial drive by selling hot dogs in the dorms. / Bumper branding and telephone canvassing are being carried on daily as the members work not only for the presidential campaign but for the local eighth district congressional campaign as well. / Future activities of the club include a state campaign workshop, a special campus YR meeting, and programs featuring various speakers. / The U. Va. sponsored state workshop will emphasize the “coordination of national, state, and local campaign efforts in Virginia.” Ray Humphreys, director of the Educational Division of the Republican National Committee, and Sam Carpenter, Chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, will be leading several seminars on the theme “Campaign Prospects 1968”. / General Eisenhower’s birthday will be celebrated at a special YR meeting to be held October 12. Congressman William Lloyd Scott, representative from the eighth district is scheduled to speak at a meeting on October 25 which will be opened to the entire campus. Now we should work to round ourselves out and make ourselves known for community service as well.” / The many awards that were presented Thursday evening are testimony to the work of the Young Republicans. Marty Blair and Nikki Fowler received awards for their work in recruiting MWC republicans into the Club. Transcription Any written text transcribed from a sound Article 1: Boys vs. Girls in MWC Game / GOP Rules (Football) Panel Wields Power / By LINDA RAYMOND / The University of Virginia won another football game yesterday, but it wasn’t easy. / The opposition was Mary Washington College. / The game was a challenge match between Mary Washington College Young Republicans and the Young Republicans Club at the University. The University club won 6-0, but against mighty odds. / To begin with, the game was played on the Mary Washington hockey field with officials from the Mary Washington club and rules that were strictly by the book, with a few major exceptions. / The exceptions were the work of the Mary Washington football rules committee, organized especially for the occasion to see that the game was fairly and evenly matched. / It was to be a touch football game, so the committee began by spelling out the sort of touches that would be permitted. Boys had to use two hands; girls could use one. / Boys could pass once per play and have one time out per quarter. Girls could pass and call time-outs whenever they felt it necessary. / After a short practice session, the MW team decided a few rules should be added. For one, a girl uggested the boys be required to announce “I am going to kick the football” before any kicks. / The rules committee decided to adopt the kicking rule but decided the bouncing one was a little too much. “They’re going to object,” said a teammate. / “I’m sorry,” said the committee head, “They aren’t members of the rules committee.” / When the boys arrived shortly after 3 p.m. they did object. / “I think you should know,” said their president trying to keep a straight face, “That we are playing this game under protest.” / The University won the coin toss, and kicked off. The response on the other side was slightly confused. The receiver dropped the ball, but recoverd it amid the hilarity. / A short time later, the U. Va. quarterback left the field shaking his head. / “I bet I’m the only quarterback who has ever had his pass intercepted by his girlfriend,” he moaned. / About 25 Young Republicans turned out to play for each side, so there were plenty of players to make up offensive and defensive teams and to pad the size of teams on the field as play progressed. / Despite the growing numbers on both sides, neither team seemed to do very well getting touchdowns. Transcription Any written text transcribed from a sound Item 1: Community Service – help registration at Mental Health / Association meeting Item 1: To The Citizens Of Virginia from your State Colleges and Universities / September 14, 1968 / Virginia faces an emergency. / Within two years present State educational and hospital facilities—already over-burdened—will be absolutely inadequate to meet the needs of our growing population. / The people of the Commonwealth of Virginia will vote, on November 5, 1968, to meet this emergency without changing present tax rates or the State Constitution. / In 1928 Governor Harry F. Byrd urged Virginia’s legislature and voters to enact a Constitutional amendment which would enable the State to meet such an emergency. Virginians wisely adopted the amendment, which carefully limited the amount and the purpose for which State construction bonds may be issued. / Now, forty years later, Governor Mills E. Godwin, Jr. has strongly recommended, and the 1968 General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly, that the Constitution’s emergency provision be used. / If on November 5, Virginia citizens for FOR issuing the $81 million in bonds, then urgently-needed classrooms, laboratories, libraries and hospital facilities will be constructed in all parts of the State by 1970 or soon thereafter. / The $81 million represents only 2 ½% of the present State budget. With Virginia’s rising productivity and population, tax revenues will rise at present tax rates. The $81 million bond issues are the most prudent and inexpensive means of providing the construction that is urgently needed now. / The projects to be financed have already been selected by the people, through their elected General Assembly, from among more than $200 million in construction programs that were requested in 1967 by the State-operated colleges, universities, and hospitals, but for which current State tax revenues are inadequate. / There is no other solution. We cannot meet the emergency by limiting students from out-of-state; their number is relatively small now, and the number of Virginia students who in one year left our State for higher education has exceeded by 10,000 the number of out-of-state students enrolled in our own State-operated institutions. Further overcrowding of classroom, laboratory and library space will seriously impair the quality of education. Article 1: Nixon wins in 45% turnout / Students pass bond issue and liquor by the drink / Results of the student and faculty mock election held last Wednesday show Nixon favored over Humphrey. / Out of 966 votes cast for presidential candidates, 542 voted for the Nixon-Agnew ticket, 387 for Humphrey-Muskey, and 37 for Wallace-LeMay. In the Eighth District Congressional contest William Scott received 583 votes to 300 for Democrat Andrew McCutcheon. / The other questions on the short, simple ballot concerned the liquor by the drink resolution and the bond issue, the two most controversial issues in the Virginia elections this year. On the Mary Washington campus, liquor by the drink passed 845 to 114. The bond issue received a favorable response of 821 votes, but with a surprising number of dissenters—91. / Approximately 45-50 per cent of the student body voted in ACL foyer during the eight hours the polling was conducted. About forty professors participated. / Ten write-ins appeared in the president-vice president section; two votes for Gregory-Spock, three for Rockefeller-Lindsay, McCarthy recived four, and one person advocated a McGovern-Muskie coalition. Scott came out on top in a mock election held yesterday at Mary Washington College. / Both the state’s proposed $81 million bond issue and Fredericksburg’s option on liquor-by-the-drink received favorable votes from students and faculty. / Of the votes cast by 912 students from an enrollment of more than 2,100 in the presidential race, Nixon received the support of 527. Hubert H. Humphrey got 359 votes, while George C. Wallace trailed with 36 votes. / Only 43 of the more than 150 faculty and staff members voted, but their ballots reversed the decision of the students. / They named Humphrey the next president with 28 votes. Nixon tallied 15 and Wallace lagged with one lone vote. / A 1964 student poll at Mary Washington elected Lyndon B. Johnson, but had heavily favored Republican nominees in prior contests. / Johnson’s 58 per cent margin in 1964 compared with a 62 per cent margin in the students cast for Nixon in 1960 and a 76 per cent landslide for Eisenhower in 1956. / In other races this year, 842 students voters cast votes on the 8th District Congressional race. Incumben Scott received 569 votes, while his opponent Andrew H. McCutcheon received 300. Both men have appeared on campus. / Faculty support in this race also conflicted with student opinion. Of the 41 faculty who voted, 27 favored McCutcheon and 14 named Scott. / The bond issue received the support of 90 per cent of the total 912 voting on the issue. / Liquor by the drink was approved, 845 to 114. There were 123 members present. / The chairman introduced the 1968-69 club officers. / Tina Convery told the club about the campaign workshop at UVa. on October 12. / The remainder of the meeting consisted of various announcements. / Congressman Scott will be on MWC campus at 4:00 PM. October 25. A reception will follow the speech and a rally at the Sharation Motor Inn at 8:00pm that night. / On October 29 and 30, the SGA is sponsoring a debate and mock election. / Volunteers were asked to distribute matches and emory boards for Bill Scott in Fredericksburg. / Bumper branding will be done on October 17 and 24 at local shopping centers. / The meeting ended with an enthusiastic speech by Bari Holden, last year’s chairman. Article 1a: Two Candidates For House Seat Urge Final Push / By JOHN GOOLRICK / The two 8th District congressional candidates both exhorted the party faithful last night to sock it to ‘em in the remaining 10 days of the campaign. / Incumbent Rep. William L. Scott, a Republican, warned about 50 supporters at a $10-a-plate dinner at the General Washington Inn, “We must be concerned about complacency. Everywhere I go I hear good things, but I hope we won’t let up. Two years ago Judge Smith thought he had nothing to worry about and that complacency helped beat him.” / At the Princess Anne Inn, where about 175 Democrats were gathered for a $10-a-plate dinner, Democratic nominee Andrew H. McCutcheon told the audience, “We’re going to win on Nov. 5. It will take a lot of work on your part and my part between now and then but we have brought unity to the Democratic party in the 8th District and we are going to have a Democrat in Congress once again.” / Principal speaker at the Democratic dinner was J. Vaughan Gary of Richmond, former 3rd District congressman who McCutcheon served as administrative assistant for four years. Article 1b: Gary told the audience that if, “I had to name one person in Virginia who was best qualified to serve in Congress, that man would be Andy McCutcheon…I know whereof I speak because it was my pleasure to have him on my staff and I can tell you that he’s a man who can do just about anything and do it well…if the people of this district have the wisdom to put him in Congress, I predict that within Article 1c: 10 years time, Andy McCutcheon will be known as one of the most distinguished and respected members of that body.” / Gary assailed what he termed the “frightening ecomomic record” of the national Republican party. In eight Republican years under Eisenhower, said Gary, there had been three recessions, unemployment climbed from three to seven percent and the average gross national product increased but $75 billion yearly. Under the years of the Kennedy-Johnson administrations since 1960, he said, there had been 92 months of depression free growth, a decline in unemployment from seven to four per cent and an average gross national product increase of $181.5 billion yearly.” Article 1d: “Many people seem to be protesting these days,” he said, “but about what I don’t know. I think this is a pretty good country myself and I think under the Democrats we have attained the greatest prosperity enjoyed by any nation in the history of the world.” / On the question of Vietnam, Gary defended the Johnson record and said he was opposed to “any Chamberlin type sell-out there or any place else…more than 20 years ago after a visit to Europe I came back to America and said I was convinced the goal of the Communists was nothing less than world domination. Nothing has happened in the meantime to change my mind.” / The law and order issue “we so often hear about” said Gary, “isn’t really a federal matter. It’s a state matter. The Constitution specifically gives the states authority to regulate their own domestic matters…if by law and order some of these candidates mean establishment of a federal gestapo, then I’m completely against it.” Article 1e: Scott, in his talk at the General Washington, noted that former Congressman Gary was “talking in favor of my opponent right here in Fredericksburg tonight and I think that’s good, I think it’s nice for a former boss to give a former employee a pat on the back. When my opponent worked for Mr. Gary, he used to vote down in the Third District near Richmond and, of course, that was as it should be. But as a matter of fact I am not sure at all that this man who is now running for Congress in the 8th District has ever voted in the 8th District. I’m not saying he hasn’t, but I’d be interested in knowing.” / Following the dinner, Scott was greeted by about 100 supporters, many of them Mary Washington College Young Republicans, at a free rally and dance at the Sheraton Motor Inn. “I haven’t been perfect,” he told the group, “and I haven’t claimed to be. I suspect that we will be seeing a great deal of activity on campus on behalf of the Presidential candidates—some has already begun—and I think this is great. I fervently hope that Richard Nixon will be the next President of the United States, because I think that only he can provide the leadership we so desperately need at home and abroad. / But I sincerely hope that in the excitement of this Presidential election, we don’t forget that there is also a Congressional race going on in this District. I worked for the election of Bill Scott in 1966 when he was first elected to Congress. Since then, I have become more convinced than ever that Bill Scott is a great Representative for the 8th District. / He has travelled to every part of the District to hear their problems at the county court houses; he has taken several polls of his constituent’s views and his voting has reflected these views; he has sent out newsletters to keep his constituents informed on what he is doing; and he has opened an office in Fredericksburg to further serve the District’s needs. In short, he has been a true Representative of all of the people in this District and a full-time Congressman. No matter how small a problem is, when someone feels deeply enough to ask Bill Scott for help, they get it. / There are so many things wrong with the government in Washington now, and sometimes we forget to show appreciation for those things that are good. I hope that during the hectic campaign of the next month the students here will consider the great job Bill Scott has done, and will join with the over-whelming number of 8th District residents in helping to re-elect Bill Scott to Congress. / Sincerely, / VALERIE ADAMS Article 3: The Free Lance-Star, Fredericksburg, Virginia Wednesday, September 25, 1968 / MW Students Form Group For Nixon / Mary Washington College students have formed a Youth for Nixon group at the college in honor of a National Youth for Nixon Week which begins today. / The MWC group is scheduled to distribute Nixon-Agnew flyers on campus this week and to recruit students to work on former vice president Richard Nixon’s campaign. College Young Republicans will also donate all the proceeds of a weekly fund-raising project to the Nixon campaign. / Later, the Youth for Nixon group will do volunteer work with local Republican writers, and members will write letters to their families and friends requesting support for Nixon. / The group is the second to be formed in the 8th District. The first was formed last week at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland. / Youth for Nixon Week, proclaimed by Nixon’s national youth organization, is scheduled to end Oct. 1. Article 4: National Nixon group opens MWC branch / Youth for Nixon, a national organization for student supporters of presidential hopeful Richard M. Nixon, reached the Mary Washington College campus two weeks ago. Differing from other Republican organizations at MWC, Youth for Nixon is for all Nixon supporters, regardless of any past or present party affiliation. / Members of Youth for Nixon feel that MWC Nixon supporters can make a real contribution towards Nixon’s election if they are joined together in an organized campaign effort. Beverley Brown, Youth for Nixon’s president at MWC says “the club’s main goal is to solicit Nixon support from adults of voting age around the community and state.” / Members are doing volunteer work at the Nixon campaign headquarters in Fredericksburg and will mail Nixon literature to voters of this area. Youth for Nixon also plans to have write-ups in the Richmond and Fredericksburg newspapers to show the tremendous support for Nixon among college-age people. / About 250 students at MWC are already Youth for Nixon members, and 250 new members are expected this week, Beverley said. Members will be given Nixon bumper stickers and campaign literature and will receive a weekly newsletter with current campaign developments.
