Transcription Any written text transcribed from a sound Article 1a: The Bullet Mary Washington College, Monday, November 6, 1967 / Campus Political Organizations Participate In Election Campaigns / Tomorrow, November 7, marks the completion of a busy campaign for the Young Republican and Young Democrat organizations on campus. / The Young Republication Club is working in Fredericksburg and the surrounding countries to induce support for Paige Young, candidate for the House of Delegates. / The MWC Young Republican club has won the prize in the State sponsored “Matching Funds Program” in their category. The program was set up by the State Young Republican Federation and the 8th Congressional District was paired with the 1st Congressional District in the Contest. / All of the Young Republican Clubs in these two areas were eligible for the prize by raising money for a non-incumbent Republican candidate for the House of Delegates in their area. Article 1b: Political Clubs Aid Campaigns / MWC Young Republicans in conjunction with the Stafford Young Republicans and the Spotsylvania Young Republicans won the State prize for their support for Paige A. Young. / These clubs raised a total of $1,168.85 including $165.00 raised directly on the MWC campus through various Young Republican projects. The prize amounted to an additional $250.00 which was also turned over to the Young Campaign. The prize was presented to Mr. Young on Monday, October 30, by Bari Anne Holden, MWC YR Chairman, and John Adams, Chairman of the Spotsylvania Young Republicans. / In announcing the prize, Bari Anne Holden stated “This is only one area in which our club has vigorously supported Paige. We have been working since the middle of September on staffing his campaign headquarters, getting out his bumper stickers, canvassing, and the many other tedious jobs that make a political campaign.” / Besides sponsoring the mixer at the college on November 4 and bringing Congressman James Buchanan to speak at the college, the Young Republication Club will participate in the state and regional Republican conventions. The club staged a membership drive earlier this year and now has 225 members. The club hopes to bring more speakers to the campus and to submit the club in the Young Republican Club contest sponsored by the State Young Republican Federation. Young was defeated in his bid for the 61st District House of Delegates seat representing Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania. This was Young’s first attempt in the political arena, and he was found to be in very good spirits when interviewed on Wednesday. Young said, “I think more people should take an active interest in government affairs, and I certainly intend to continue working for the same principles that we fought for in this campaign.” He went on to say, “There is a better alternative to the Great Society - - the Republican alternative. They did a terrific job. / SHENANDOAH VALLEY COLLEGE CONFERENCE / The Second Annual Shenandoah Valley College Conference will be held November 18&19, at the Natural Bridge Hotel. The Conference is designed to bring College Republicans in contact with major political problems in a seminar atmosphere. / The conference will open at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday. There will be two general sessions, followed by a banquet and another of the famous College YR Parties. Those conventions always provide the political and social highlights of the year, giving the club members and opportunity to meet the YR’s from, all over the state and region, participate in convention politics and have their views heard where it counts. / The state convention will prove to be particularly exciting this year because one of our own club members, Margaret Lawrence will be running for the office of Secretary in the College Federation. Margaret is a Junior Political Science major at MWC and is presently the membership Chairman for the MWC Young Republicans. She has also served as Co-Chairman of the Publicity Committee for the YR’s and in her two years of active service has held many other positions and participated actively in State YR functions. In seeking this office, Margaret is running on a slate headed by Bill Wright, Chairman of the U. Va. YR’s. Others running on this slate include Liz Medaglia, Chairman of the Sweetbriar YR’s, and Paul Scott, Chairman of the William & Mary YR’s and son of our Congressman, William L. Scott. Opposing Bill Wright for the State College Chairmanship is Gil Davis, of the U. Va. Law School YR’s. At the moment, Davis appears to be running well behind and Wright’s slate seems headed for victory. / The State Convention will begin on Friday night, March 1st and run through Sunday. The MWC YR’s will be chartering a bus to the convention providing free transportation to all MWC delegates and alternates to the convention and back. The $12.00 Registration fee will include a Chairman’s reception on Friday evening and a luncheon and banquet on Saturday in addition to all of the parties which will take place on Friday and Saturday evening. After the Friday night reception there will be caucuses, campaigning, committee meetings, open hospitality suites, and parties. The convention itself will run all day Saturday followed by the banquet, and more parties. The activities will end on Sunday morning with an Executive Board meeting. / The Region III Convention will begin on Friday evening, March 15, in Staunton, and will be of a similar nature, except that all colleges from D.C., Maryland, W. Va., and Kentucky will also be represented and we will be adopting a platform in addition to electing officers.
