The job of the membership committee is to actively recruit the members, and the job of the treasurer (in accordance with the constitution) is to keep the membership role and to collect the dues. Therefore, once the member is signed up on the application, the form should be turned in to the treasurer as soon as possible for the official listing and the collection of dues (which will in practicality be done with the assistance of the dorm representatives on the membership committee) / In order to facilitate the membership drive dorm quotas have been set by taking into consideration the membership from each dorm last year, and also calculating the number of residents in each dormitory. Young, Republican candidate for the House of Delegates from the 61st District of Virginia (which includes Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, and Stafford), gave us his views on the local race when interviewed by Bari Anne Holden, MWC YR Chairman. / When asked why he decided to run for office, Paige said, “I am seeking this responsibility because I feel that government has become our master rather than our servant. I am opposed to federal encroachment upon our rights of the States and feel that the best way to eliminate such encroachment is for the states to vigorously fulfill their duties to their citizens.” Commenting further, Young pointed out that “good government is a possibility only as we seek to be represented by men of principle and integrity. We must be able to trust our representatives in all ways. / Regarding his campaign slogan “THINK YOUNG * VOTE YOUNG” he stressed the fact that almost half of our voting population is composed of young people and that almost half of the total U. S. population will soon be of voting age. He said, “We must become more and more concerned with the kind of future we will provide for these young people and their children – we have a responsibility to make sure that opportunities will available through honest representative government.” / Finally Paige commented on his campaign promises by saying, “I do not promise anything to the people of the 61st District except that I will represent them honestly and to the best of my ability. Starting the first part of October we received permission from the administration to sell hotdogs in the dorms / every Tuesday night. The YRs cook and sell them within each dorm complete with mustard, relish and ketchup. (With this, we have the / guarantee that no one else will be permitted to sell food in the dorms / that night). This project nets about $40-$50.00 each week. / In addition, money was raised by chartering a bus to a U.Va YR mixer, / (about $50.00). A small sum was raised by selling 50-50 doorprize chances at / the free mixer held at MWC by the YRs. / We were the first and only organization / on campus to sponsor a mixer on campus / and it was a smashing success giving us / much campus-wide publicity. The chances / ere sold with a guarantee that the / winner would receive $25.00 or 50% of / the profits (after expenses) whichever / was greater. We had a profit of $50.00 - / $25. For the club and $25 to the winner. / The money raised by the club has been used primarily for / scholarships and contributions. The club donated $165.00 to / Paige Young’s campaign for the House of Delegates; contributed $50.00 / towards sending a group to the Shenandoah Conference; contributed / to the 8th District Senior Party operating funds and contributed / towards the 8th District LTS scholarship. Buchanan Jr. of Alabama told 200 Mary Washington College Students last night./The differences between the two countries are over “when they’re going to bury us, how they’re going to do it, and who will be the chief undertaker,” Buchanan said. / Speaking at a meeting sponsored by the college’s Young Republican Club and Student Government Association, Buchanan said he does not favor the recognition of Red China by the United States at this time. / “We have had more communication with her (through channels in Poland) than with any other country in the world. This is the worst time to change our policy because of China’s internal problems. Transcription Any written text transcribed from a sound Article 1a: The Bullet Mary Washington College, Monday, November 6, 1967 / Campus Political Organizations Participate In Election Campaigns / Tomorrow, November 7, marks the completion of a busy campaign for the Young Republican and Young Democrat organizations on campus. / The Young Republication Club is working in Fredericksburg and the surrounding countries to induce support for Paige Young, candidate for the House of Delegates. / The MWC Young Republican club has won the prize in the State sponsored “Matching Funds Program” in their category. The program was set up by the State Young Republican Federation and the 8th Congressional District was paired with the 1st Congressional District in the Contest. / All of the Young Republican Clubs in these two areas were eligible for the prize by raising money for a non-incumbent Republican candidate for the House of Delegates in their area. The—Cont. Article 1b: Political Clubs Aid Campaigns / MWC Young Republicans in conjunction with the Stafford Young Republicans and the Spotsylvania Young Republicans won the State prize for their support for Paige A. Young. / These clubs raised a total of $1,168.85 including $165.00 raised directly on the MWC campus through various Young Republican projects. The prize amounted to an additional $250.00 which was also turned over to the Young Campaign. The prize was presented to Mr. Young on Monday, October 30, by Bari Anne Holden, MWC YR Chairman, and John Adams, Chairman of the Spotsylvania Young Republicans. / In announcing the prize, Bari Anne Holden stated “This is only one area in which our club has vigorously supported Paige. We have been working since the middle of September on staffing his campaign headquarters, getting out his bumper stickers, canvassing, and the many other tedious jobs that make a political campaign.” / Besides sponsoring the mixer at the college on November 4 and bringing Congressman James Buchanan to speak at the college, the Young Republication Club will participate in the state and regional Republican conventions. The club staged a membership drive earlier this year and now has 225 members. The club hopes to bring more speakers to the campus and to submit the club in the Young Republican Club contest sponsored by the State Young Republican Federation.
