Article 1: New Members Join Honorary Societies At Tapping Convo / Twelve honorary fraternities and sororities tapped qualified students for membership Thursday, November 2 in a formal ceremony in GW auditorium. One other sorority was represented but tapped no new members. / Following an organ prelude played by Kathleen Sprenkle, the academic procession, consisting of the presidents of honoraries, the student and faculty members of honoraries, and the Senior Class, entered the auditorium. Joyce Lyons, president of the Inter-Club Association, introduced the evening’s program. The tapping of new members by the presidents of the respective honoraries followed. / Myrtle Lee Dean, president of Alpha Phi Sigma, tapped Joanne Frank, Alice Faye Giddings, Sarah Carter Jones, Laraine Carol Kopek, Eleanor Esther Osborne, Bonnie Grace Ramsey, Jean Elizabeth Sheehan, Joyce Anne Shelton, Elizabeth Ackerly Swartz, Virginia Louise Westhaver, Rebecca Lorraine Wyatt, Patsy Louise Ballou, Kathleen Joyce Broderick, Nancy Duques, Diane Stuart Lovewell, Kathleen Leah Sprenkle, Marsha Jane Arlott, Maxie Jo Nelson, and Joyce Annette Wilborn. Alpha Phi Sigma is the National Honorary Scholastic Fraternity and its purpose is to recognize students of high scholastic achievement. Membership is awarded to those students who attain a 2.5 average for two consecutive semesters. / Lillian Ann Dix, president of Eta Sigma Phi, tapped Helen Elizabeth Ambler, Barbara Burton, Constance Gilderdale, Lora Elizabeth Harman, Mary Martin, Mary Ann Graves, Nan Rae Marion, Joyce Shelton, and Paulette Wienke. Eta Sigma Phi is the National Honorary Classic Fraternity and its purpose is to promote and stimulate interest in classical study. A B average for one year in a classical language is required for membership. / Betsy Jean Williams, president of Mu Phi Epsilon, announced that there wer no students qualified for membership at the present time, so none were tapped. Mu Phi Epsilon is the National Professional Music Sorority and its purposes are to recognize scholarship and musicianship and to promote friendship through Phi Psi Chapter. Membership requirements are second semester standing as a music major, a B average in music and courses and an overall C average. / Romance Languages / Mrs. Mildred M. Bolling, representing Phi Sigma Iota, tapped Lois Ann Adams, Kathleen J. Broderick, Judith DuVal, Patricia B. Garrison, Marcia Kirstein, Judith Overstreet, Mary Elizabeth Taylor, and Mrs. Consuelo Hidalgo Van Beek, a faculty member. Phi Sigma Iota is the National Honorary Romance Language Fraternity, and its purpose is to prepare students for graduate school and other positions requiring knowledge of the romance language. Juniors with 2.5 averages are eligible for membership. / Marion Dillon Hart, president of Psi Chi, tapped Linda Morrison, Clarice Korman, Harriet George, Kathleen Hunter and John J. Bibb, faculty member. Psi Chi is the National Society in Psychology and its purpose is to recognize achievement in the study of psychology. Membership requirements include a B average in psychology courses and an over-all B average with no failures. / Pi Gamma Mu / Pat Mackey, president of Pi Gamma Mu, tapped Olivia Jean Baker, Ellen Roberts, Katherine Tennell, Leila F. Haikal, Donna Bowling, Ann E. H. Radway, Sally Shropshire, and Joyce Lyons. Pi Gamma Mu is the National Social Science Honorary Society and its purposes are to improve scholarship in the social studies, to inspire social service to humanity, and to promote mutual understanding among peoples. Twenty semester hours in the social sciences with an average grade therin of B or higher and no failures are the membership requirements. / Lillian Ann Dix, president of Pi Delta Gamma, tapped Clara Middleton, Harriet Faye Davis, and Ginger Rawlings, who is at present studying in Spain. Pi Delta Gamma is the Home Economics Honorary and its purposes are to stimulate and recognize high standards of scholarship in Home Economics and to encourage others to strive for the same excellence. Juniors and seniors enrolled in home economics with a 1.2 overall average and a 2.2 average in home economics are eligible for membership. / Debbie Ashton, president of Sigma Omega Chi, tapped Sandra Lee Moore, Diane Lovewell, Ginger Logie, Betsy Chamberlain, and Linda Ropertz. Sigma Omega Chi is the Honorary Society in Sociology and its purposes are to extend knowledge of sociology and to encourage its practical application toward wholesome personal and social goals. Members are required to have a B average in sociology courses and an overall C average with no failures. / Taps Twenty-one / Ann Mullins, president of Chi Beta Phi, tapped Sally Abbott, Patsy Ballou, Evelyn Barley, Georgene Branch, Carol M. Brown, Janice Coleman, Patricia Garrison, Marna Harlow, Joyce Henderson, Louise Hosfield, Nancy Hall, Wanda Hutchins, Mary Porter Hutchinson, Lynn Jenkins, Betsy Ross Johnson, Nancy LaPrade, Maxie Jo Nelson, Carolyn Pollard, Linda Sharples, Amanda Whichard and Linda Wood. Chi Beta Phi is the Natonal Honorary Science Fraternity and its purpose is to honor achievement in science. Membership requirements include 20 hours in natural science and mathematics, a 2.5 average in these subjects and a 2.0 average in all other subjects. / Marsha Arlott, president of Sigma Tau Chi, tapped Louise Couch, Karen McCauley and Ernestine Thomson. Sigma Tau Chi is the Economics Honorary and its purpose is to further interest and knowledge in economics. Members are required to have nine hours in economics and a C average. / Two Are Tapped / Lacy Powell, president of Sigma Tau Delta, tapped Rani Coates and Janice Powers. Sigma Tau Delta is the National Honorary English Fraternity and its purpose is to unite those with an interest in English. A member must have a B average in English with no grade below a D, an over-all C average with no failures, and must contribute to or work on an MWC publication.
