Item 1a: WHICH PARTY IS FOR … Young America?
Item 1b: REPUBLICAN PLATFORM / 1968 YOUTH PLANK / More than any other nation, America reflects the strength and creative energy of youth. In every productive enterprise, the vigor, imagination and skills of our young people have contributed immeasurably to progress. / Our youth today are endowed with greater knowledge and maturity than any such generation of the past. Their political restlessness reflects their urgent hope to achieve a meaningful participation in public affairs commensurate with their contributions as responsible citizens. / In recognition of the abilities of these younger citizens, their desire to participate, and their service in the nation’s defense, we believe that lower age groups should be accorded the right to vote. We believe that states which have not yet acted should reevaluate their positions with respect to 18-year-old voting, and that each such state should decide this matter for itself. We urge the states to act now. / For greater equity we will further revise Selective Service policies and reduce the number of years during which a young man can be considered for the draft, thereby providing some certainty to those liable for military service. When military manpower needs can be appreciably reduced, we will place the Selective Service System on standby and substitute a voluntary force obtained through adequate pay and career incentives. / We encourage responsible young men and women to join actively in the political process to help shape the future of the nation. We invite them to join our Republican effort to assure the new direction and the new leadership which this nation so urgently needs and rightfully expects.

Item 1e: June 22, 1968 / Youth and the Convention / As part of the effort to stage an Old Politics Convention, the Democratic National Committee has decided to eliminate the Young Democrats and the College Young Democrats from formal participation in the program. Apparently the young people cannot be counted upon to stamp, whistle and cheer for the right candidate. A convention which cannot allow all of its members to participate is operating on the fringes of reality. Such tactics are those which serve to alienate youth from a “democratic” system. / PATRICIA KAVANAGH, / President, Manhattanville College Young Democrats. / Washington.
Item 1f: August 12, 1968 / Apathy in Party Seen / “Members of the Democratic party have become apathetic because there have been no active roles for them to fulfill. It is not by chance that young people today—perhaps the most politically active generation in our history—have not sought, nor have they been encouraged, to function within the Young Democrats. / “For this organization has tacked the spark, the fire and the political awareness of people today, and particularly the young people who have taken part in my campaign.” / Other reforms recommended by Mr. McCarthy were as follows:
