Article 1: The Free Lance-Star, Fredericksburg, Virginia/Wednesday, October 4, 1967/21 / No Basic Split Between Reds Seen / There is no basic breech between the Soviet Union and Red China, Rep. John H. Buchanan Jr. of Alabama told 200 Mary Washington College Students last night./The differences between the two countries are over “when they’re going to bury us, how they’re going to do it, and who will be the chief undertaker,” Buchanan said. / Speaking at a meeting sponsored by the college’s Young Republican Club and Student Government Association, Buchanan said he does not favor the recognition of Red China by the United States at this time. / “We have had more communication with her (through channels in Poland) than with any other country in the world. This is the worst time to change our policy because of China’s internal problems. We would be propping up an evil which would not survve without our help.” / Buchanan, who has traveled in Russia, Communist Asia and Vietnam, said he sees little danger of Russia or China becoming involved in Vietnam. / “I wish I knew what is right in Vietnam,” he said. “I’ve been a hawk all along, I feel little danger that Russia will become more heavily involved and almost no danger that Red China will.” / He said American policy should be to “bring the enemy to his knees which is a good place for negotiations.” / Answering questions on the 1968 presidential race, Buchanan said he feels Reagan and Nixon are the two best possibilities to get the Republican nomination. / Romney, he said will fade. Percy and Rockefeller will run but will not get the nomination./He commented that Reagan’s chances “are good because he hasn’t been brain washed yet.” / During his talk Buchanan compared himself to Paige Young, the Republican candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates from Fredericksburg. Buchanan noted that both he and Young are Baptist ministers who have become involved in politics. / He said that the political life and clerical life are closely linked because both involve a combination of public speaking, personal contact and committee work in a work of ideas and associations.” / Political involvement is necessary today, Buchanan said, because “this republic and its freedoms are being challenged as never before.”
