MARY FRANCES BALLARD, College Chapter Vice President / VOLUME 25 WINTER ISSUE, 1967 NUMBER 1 / PRESIDENT’S LETTER / Dear Home Economist: As we enter our 5 year of the Virginia Home Economics Association, it is with deep humility and much pride that I serve as your president. I would like to express my appreciation and thanks to each member of the VHEA for giving me this opportunity. / It is always exciting to attend a National Convention and, of course, San Francisco was delightful. It was a special privilege to represent you as a delegate. I was glad to see a number of you there. I wish more of you could have attended. The meeting attracted the largest number ever to attend an AHEA annual meeting; 6,113 persons attended with2,932 members registered. / The delegates attended three sessions to discuss proposed chnges for the delegate assembly and the new structure for the association. After much discussion, the assembly voted to send the proposals back to the committee with three new members being added. The suggestion was made that each state give further study to the proposals and send their suggestions to the committee. Lucille Calhoun, Chairman Future Development Committee, would welcome your suggestions. / The voting delegates representing the Virginia Association were: Mrs. Geraldine Cox, Richmond; Miss Marie Turner, Fairfax; Mrs. Betty Douglass, Portsmouth; Mrs. Evangeline Swain, Christiansburg; Miss Frances Maness, Richmond; and Dr. Laura Jane Harper served as officer delegate. / At the assembly of delegates a new statement of objectives for AHEA was approved after amendments from the floor, and it now goes to the Constitution and By Laws Committee for consideration. The final working of these objectives will be found in this issue of the Newsletter. / The theme of the 57 AHEA Convention was “Break Throughs in Meeting Family Needs.” See your 1966 September Journal for more detailed September Journal for more detailed information on the annual meeting. General session, subject matter sessions, committee reports, and business are all included. / We are pleased and proud to have two of our members as chairman of National Committees—Mrs. Jean Taylor, Chairman of AHEA Legislature Committee; and Dr. Laura Jane Harper, Chairman of the Committee on Resolutions. / Soon we will be meeting in Roanoke for the VHEA Annual Conference, March 30-April 1, 1967, and then to Dallas, Texas in June, 26-30 for the AHEA meeting. Mark these dates on your calendar and make plans to attend. Betty Douglass, 2nd Vice-President and program chairman and her committee report that they are shaping up an interesting program for our state meeting. Your next issue of the Newsletter will carry more details of the program. / You will be interested to know that at the Executive Council Meeting in August, the council set up in the budget $500 for an International Scholarship Fund. An international student is being requested for 1967-68 school term if possible to get one by this date. / Many of you remember Ayse Baysal from Turkey, our international scholarship student who received her B.S. degree in general home economics from V.P.I. in 1961 and stayed for graduate work. She is now in charge of the Extension Home Economics Program in Turkey. / A workshop for the college chapters was held this fall at V.P.I. with a most worthwhile program. You will find more reference to tis in the college chapter section of this issue of the Newsletter. / Our membership chairman, Jean Taylor, is doing an excellent job, but she needs your help. Won’t you please contact home economists you know who are not members of the association but should be. Jean will be glad to mail membership blanks to you. How about last year’s graduate? What about the graduating seniors? / What are you doing to recruit students for home economics careers?
