Those conventions always provide the political and social highlights of the year, giving the club members and opportunity to meet the YR’s from, all over the state and region, participate in convention politics and have their views heard where it counts. / The state convention will prove to be particularly exciting this year because one of our own club members, Margaret Lawrence will be running for the office of Secretary in the College Federation. Margaret is a Junior Political Science major at MWC and is presently the membership Chairman for the MWC Young Republicans. She has also served as Co-Chairman of the Publicity Committee for the YR’s and in her two years of active service has held many other positions and participated actively in State YR functions. In seeking this office, Margaret is running on a slate headed by Bill Wright, Chairman of the U. Va. YR’s. Others running on this slate include Liz Medaglia, Chairman of the Sweetbriar YR’s, and Paul Scott, Chairman of the William & Mary YR’s and son of our Congressman, William L. Scott. Opposing Bill Wright for the State College Chairmanship is Gil Davis, of the U. Va. Law School YR’s. At the moment, Davis appears to be running well behind and Wright’s slate seems headed for victory. / The State Convention will begin on Friday night, March 1st and run through Sunday. The MWC YR’s will be chartering a bus to the convention providing free transportation to all MWC delegates and alternates to the convention and back. The $12.00 Registration fee will include a Chairman’s reception on Friday evening and a luncheon and banquet on Saturday in addition to all of the parties which will take place on Friday and Saturday evening. After the Friday night reception there will be caucuses, campaigning, committee meetings, open hospitality suites, and parties. The convention itself will run all day Saturday followed by the banquet, and more parties. The activities will end on Sunday morning with an Executive Board meeting. / The Region III Convention will begin on Friday evening, March 15, in Staunton, and will be of a similar nature, except that all colleges from D.C., Maryland, W. Va., and Kentucky will also be represented and we will be adopting a platform in addition to electing officers. Voting will take place on the constitutional amendments presented by the Platform and Legislation Committee at the last meeting. The dates set for the school are February 26 - March 1. Young Republicans from all over the country will be attending the school, and it promises to be one the best programs ever sponsored by the YRNF. Young was defeated in his bid for the 61st District House of Delegates seat representing Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania. This was Young’s first attempt in the political arena, and he was found to be in very good spirits when interviewed on Wednesday. Young said, “I think more people should take an active interest in government affairs, and I certainly intend to continue working for the same principles that we fought for in this campaign.” He went on to say, “There is a better alternative to the Great Society - - the Republican alternative. The voice of the American people came through loud and clear in 1966. In 1967 again, the Republican Party made gains in Virginia and other parts of the country. We will continue working for 1968.” / Commenting further, Mr. Young expressed his thanks to the MWC Young Republicans who tirelessly and enthusiastically dedicated so many hours of their time to the campaign. He said, “I was very encouraged that these young people took such an interest. It shows that they, too, are concerned with the trend of government today, and I wish that I could personally thank each of them. They did a terrific job. / SHENANDOAH VALLEY COLLEGE CONFERENCE / The Second Annual Shenandoah Valley College Conference will be held November 18&19, at the Natural Bridge Hotel. The Conference is designed to bring College Republicans in contact with major political problems in a seminar atmosphere. / The conference will open at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday. There will be two general sessions, followed by a banquet and another of the famous College YR Parties. On Sunday there will be a third session followed by the State College YR Executive Board meeting. The conference promises to be one of the largest attended events outside of a convention to be held. / The sessions will cover Republican alternatives to the Great Society, the New Left, and Viet Nam. George C. Transcription Any written text transcribed from a sound Item 1a: Paige Young: Candidate for House of Delegates Item 1b: “What do you mean, / we can’t decorate / his headquarters on / Sunday?” Item 1c: “No, Susie- / state vs. federal / not church vs. / state.” Article 1: The Free Lance-Star /September 12, 1967 / Young Hits State’s Impact-Aid Policy / Paige Young, Republican candidate for the area House of Delegates seat, has criticized the state’s policy of withholding approximately 50 per cent of federal impact-aid funds due localities. / Speaking to a group of area and Mary Washington College Young Republicans last night, Young said, “I am opposed to the policy of the state government deducting funds allocated by the federal government to impacted school areas.” / Under this policy, he said, the state pays localities, which are due impact-aid money from the federal government, only about half the funds allocated. / The impact-aid funds, he noted, are intended to help localities which have a high percentage of children of civilian and military government employees in their school systems, thus creating a burden on the systems that would not be present if federal installations were not in the localities. / Young contended the state policy, in effect, of taking half the money before distributing it increases local tax burdens in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania and Stafford – the area constituting the district from which he seeks the house seat. / In Stafford County, which gets far more impact-aid than either the city or Spotsylvania, School Supt. Howard O. Sullins said the county will lose $90,000 in revenue this year because of the state policy of deducting an amount from regular state funds equal to half of the impact-aid funds due a locality. / Sullins and other Stafford officials have voiced opposition to this policy on numerous occasions. The loss to Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania is considerably less. / Meanwhile, two Mary Washington College Young Republican officials, Bari Anne Holdren, chapter president, and Barbara Bailey, platforms and elections chairman have returned to school early in order to make plans for 300 members of the college chapter to aid in the Young campaign upon their return to school next week. Article 2: Our Readers Speak / Religious Leaders And Government / To the Editor: / As a student of political science, I am greatly interested and pleased to see our religious leaders taking an active interest in government. / Our country has a heritage and tradition of religious leaders in government positions and this heritage is part of the very foundation which has made our nation great. / Examples of religious leaders in government can be found from our earliest American history to the present. The first speaker of the House of Representatives, Frederick A. C. Muhlenberg, was a Lutheran clergyman; John Witherspoon, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and a member of the Continental Congress was a Presbyterian clergyman; Roger Williams, founder and head of the colony of Rhode Island, also a great advocate of religious freedom and democracy, was a clergyman. / These are but three outstanding examples which can be found of clergymen taking an active part in government. Several examples can still be found in our Congress today.
